When Ultrasonic Testing Is Relevant
UT may be requested for large-diameter bar, critical machined components or applications where internal discontinuities could affect the finished part. Test sensitivity and coverage depend on bar diameter, surface condition, grain structure, equipment, reference standards and the procedure used.
A useful UT requirement identifies the applicable standard, examination technique, scanning coverage, reference reflector or sensitivity, acceptance level and report requirements. Simply writing “UT passed” does not define a reproducible acceptance basis.
Surface Condition and Machining Allowance
Hot-worked, peeled, turned, ground and polished bars present different surfaces and dimensional capabilities. The buyer should specify the required delivery condition and enough machining allowance for the final component. A visually smooth surface does not by itself confirm internal soundness, and a rougher hot-worked surface may still be suitable when adequate stock removal is planned.
